The Doctrine — the two hinges of the chart
O f everything in the chart, two points turn fastest of all — the Ascendant and the Midheaven. They are not bodies but angles: the horizon and the meridian, fixed to the place and the moment. The Ascendant is the manner — how a life meets the world, the approach and the outward self. The Midheaven is the calling — the aim at the top of the chart, vocation and standing, what a life is seen to be for.
Progress them day-for-a-year and both drift forward — slowly, but enough that across a life each crosses from one sign into the next. And that crossing is a genuine life-turn. When the progressed Ascendant changes sign, the manner itself changes: a person once brisk grows gracious, or a quiet nature turns outward. When the progressed Midheaven changes sign, the calling turns: the summit a life is climbing toward moves to new ground. These are among the most reliable landmarks the progressed chart gives.
The turns are timed more finely by aspect: as a progressed angle draws into an exact angle with a natal planet, it brings that planet's matter to a head — a directed Midheaven meeting natal Saturn asks for responsibility in the work; a progressed Ascendant reaching natal Venus softens the manner toward warmth and relation. The angle names where the turn lands — the self, or the calling; the planet names what it is about.
The angles depend on the exact birth time and place — a chart cast for an unknown hour has no trustworthy Ascendant or MC, and so no reliable progressed angles. Where the time is sound, though, these are the clearest turns the progressed chart offers.
The Practice — a turn through each sign
Choose an angle, then a sign, to read the chapter that opens when the progressed Ascendant (the manner) or Midheaven (the calling) crosses into it.

The Casebook — which hinge is turning?
A life-turn is described. Say which angle it belongs to — a change of manner (the Ascendant) or a change of calling (the Midheaven). Then, below, your own progressed angles, cast to this day.

Look back for a turn in how you meet the world, or in what you were working toward. Did a change of manner or of calling arrive around a year your progressed Ascendant or Midheaven changed sign? Write what you notice.
The frame turns too.
We think of the birth chart as fixed, but even its frame is in slow motion. The manner ripens; the calling turns; and the two angles, crossing their signs across a life, mark the largest, quietest changes of all — the ones you feel as "I am not who I was, and I am aimed somewhere new." The measures ahead take the other moving parts: the progressed lunation cycle, the perfecting aspects in full, and the directions that make the symbolic clock computable.
“The horizon you rise on, and the summit you climb toward — both move as you do.”
