The Doctrine — the wheel turned as one
W here a progression lets each planet drift at its own speed, a direction moves the whole chart as a single rigid wheel. The measure is the solar arc — the distance the progressed Sun has travelled from its birthplace, about one degree for every year lived. Every planet, the Ascendant and the Midheaven are each pushed forward by that same arc.
Because the whole wheel turns together, the planets keep their birth distances from one another exactly — a directed planet never changes its angle to another directed planet. What matters is where the moving wheel meets the fixed chart of birth: a direction perfects the moment a directed point reaches an exact aspect to a natal one. Directed Midheaven to natal Sun, directed Saturn to natal Moon — each is a dated season the birth-promise brings forward.
Directions run on a tight leash. The arc creeps a bare degree a year, so a contact stays within its narrow orb for only a year or two, and it is always applying — closing toward exact — until it perfects and passes. This is the slow, precise hand of the clock: fewer events than the progressions, but each one sharply timed.
A direction is a tendency brought to a head on a precise year — the whole promise of birth carried forward and ripened — never a fixed event decreed, nor a fate to endure. Read the perfecting ones as seasons to meet, each with its handle.
The Practice — turn the wheel of years
The outer ring is a fixed birth chart; the inner ring is the same chart, advanced by the solar arc. Drag the inner wheel round — you are winding the years forward, roughly a degree per year. Watch the directed points sweep onto the natal ones: each meeting is a direction perfecting.
Drag the inner wheel, or step with − / +. The outer ring stays fixed at birth.
On this illustrative nativity, the directions perfecting at this arc are below. Turn the wheel and watch them form and pass — each is a season the birth-chart brings to a head at that age.

The Casebook — name the director
A directed season is coloured by the planet that is moving into contact. Read the season, and name the directing planet whose nature it wears. Then, below, your own directions, cast to this day.

Of the directions still applying, which season feels most alive — and does its timing match a turn you can name in the life? Write what it seems to be bringing forward, and the handle you would meet it with.
The clock with the steadiest hand.
The progressions give the mood of the year and the purpose of the decade; the direction gives the sharply-timed turn. Where a directed contact and a progressed one point at the same season, the astrologer reads it twice-underlined. This is the same instinct as the Vedic daśā — a life unfolding on an appointed schedule — met here from the tropical side, degree by careful degree.
“The promise is fixed at birth; direction only tells you the year it comes due.”
